Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/vot'in
Proto-Finnic
Etymology
From *vottadak (“to take”) + *-in (instrumental noun suffix). It has been theorized that *vottadak originally meant “to turn”, which would give the original meaning “tool for turning”. However, this might be anachronistic, as Proto-Finnic speakers were not yet familiar with modern locks where keys are turned to unlock. Rather, “to take” → “key” is probably tenable, as a tool to 'take' (i.e. lift) the hook or clasp holding a door shut, or as an object 'taken in' by the lock.
