Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ewp- (“to rise; up”) (compare *upó, Ancient Greek ὕψι (húpsi, “above”)), which Matasović reconstructs as *h₃ewp-. Increasingly conflated with *ud- in descendants.[1]

Irish and Celtiberian reflect the zero-grade of the prefix, while Brittonic reflects a non-zero grade of it.
