From early *mḗˀ(n)sinkas, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s-n̥-kos, from *mḗh₁n̥s (“moon; month”).

Note the same suffix as in *źṓjinkas (“rabbit, hare”) < *ǵʰṓy-n̥-kos (“frisky animal < to drive”).
