From early *mḗˀ(n)sinkas, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s-n̥-kos, from *mḗh₁n̥s (moon; month).

Note the same suffix as in *źṓjinkas (rabbit, hare) < *ǵʰṓy-n̥-kos (frisky animal < to drive).
