Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰṓy-n̥-kos (lengthened o-grade, literally “frisky animal > hare”), from *ǵʰey- (“to drive”). Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáyas (from which Sanskrit हय (háya, “horse”)), Proto-Armenian *jeioh (from which Armenian ձի (ji, “horse”)).
