Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(w)le-i-p-ḱ-eh₂[1] < probably a taboo word, from *h₂(w)lop-ḱ-eh₂, from *h₂(w)lṓp- (lengthened o-grade via schwebeablaut), from *h₂wl̥p- (“fox”, zero-grade). Due to the taboo nature of the word, the root has changed significantly in most Indo-European descendants. ESSJa suggests a secondary vocalization of zero-grade of *-i- form. Similar to Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrawpāćás (“jackal, fox”), where there was a secondary vocalization of *-u- form.[1][2]
