Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-ṓ ~ *h₁el-h₁én (e-grade), *h₁ol-ṓ ~ *h₁ol-h₁én (o-grade), from *h₁el- (“deer, elk”). Cognate with Old Armenian եղն (ełn, “hind”).
