Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-h₁én-yos (e-grade), *h₁ol-h₁én-yos (o-grade), from *h₁el- (“deer, elk”). By surface analysis, *elṓ + *-jas. Cognate with Old Armenian եղն (ełn, “hind”).
