Prakrit

Etymology

Related to 𑀥𑀭𑀕𑁆𑀕 (dharagga, cotton) and 𑀢𑀕𑁆𑀕 (tagga, thread), of uncertain origin.

Burrow suggests a relation to Classical Persian دَرْز (darz, seam), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰarȷ́ʰ-.[1] However, this root cannot be expected to result in Middle Indo-Aryan -gg- since the expected outcome of *-rȷ́ʰ- is Sanskrit -rh- (e.g. Sanskrit दर्हति (darhati) < Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰárȷ́ʰati). An unusual fortition of -rh- would be necessary to explain -gg-.

Noun

*𑀥𑀸𑀕𑁆𑀕 (*dhāggam (Devanagari *धाग्ग) (Proto-New Indo-Aryan)[2]
