Folklore says travellers from another community followed the path of migrating birds and hunted wild animals. Hunting and planting camote and gabi were the primary means of livelihood during that time, aside from bartering them in exchange of other products with other neighboring communities. As time passed, the new settlers experienced food shortage due to the disappearance of wild animals to hunt and insufficient knowledge in rice farming. Not long after, "Nawal", a medium-built man who was a settler from another community joined this new settlement.

As days passed, Nawal introduced a system of rice farming to the villagers, wherein he tilled, levelled, and stonewalled a piece of land while the villagers watched. He finished his rice paddies until it yielded rice grains sufficient enough for his consumption. The villagers were amazed and encouraged them to learn and practice rice farming.

The tribes were very thankful to Nawal. At that time, it was common practice to nam the rice paddies after the person who leveled it to identify the owner. Since Nawal contributed much progress to the people, the villagers called their new community after him. The rice paddies that Nawal cultivated, located at sitio Shontog, were also named after him.
