Etymology

A tautological toponym from the Latin mons +‎ Arabic جَبَل (jabal), both meaning “mountain”. It is not clear if the first element derives directly from Sicilian munti, from Latin mōns, montem or from another romance adstratum; in any case, the last syllable dropped unusually in favour of the palatalization with the second compound word.
