Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese xara, from Arabic شَعْرَاء (šaʕrāʔ), from شَعْر (šaʕr, “hair, fur”). The original meaning of “hairy” semantically extended to refer to places covered in vegetation (as in etymology 2 sense 2). Compare Mirandese xara, Spanish jara.
