Etymology
Attested as Ottoman Turkish قچانیك (kaçanik) (1660), Italian Kazianick (1700). The town was reportedly founded, or perhaps renovated, by Grand Vizir Koxha Sinan Pasha, whose epithet suffixed with the Slavic suffix -nik became the name of the town. The devoicing of /d͡ʒ/ in this context is characteristic of Albanian, most likely due to influenc of the kaça- prefixoid, and also observed in the corradical koçobash.
Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi, by folk etymology, explained it as a derivation from Ottoman Turkish قاچان (kaçan, “fleeing”), for the full anecdote read the quote at قچانیك (kaçanik).
