Usage notes
- Offensive to many devout Christians, stemming from the taboo against uttering in vain the name of God, of which Jesus Christ forms one part in the Holy Trinity.
- Minced oaths to avoid this phrase include include Jiminy Cricket, jeepers creepers, other variations that begin with the letters J C, or phrases that sound similar such as cheese and rice. These are often considered acceptable substitutions for people who are trying not to swear, but have already started the first consonant sound. See The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain), for more examples.
