Ancient Greek ἵππος (híppos, “horse”) + Ancient Greek κρηπῐ́ς (krēpĭ́s, “boot”).
Coined by Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist Carl Linnaeus in 1735; compare earlier Latin ferrum equinum (“horse iron”). The name refers to the shape of the plant's fruit or seed.
