    From grão (“great”) + Old Tupi pará (“wide river”). It was initially the name of the Amazon River, and later applied to the captaincy.

    The municipality in Santa Catarina got its name from Colônia Grão Pará, named after (1875-1940) Pedro de Alcantara, Prince of Grão-Pará.
