Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Feijoo, from feijoo (“bean”). Cognate with Galician Feijóo; doublet of feijão.

The municipality in Acre is named after Brazilian politician and priest Diogo Antônio Feijó (1784–1843), whence also Regente Feijó, a municipality in São Paulo.
