Etymology
Borrowed from Latin adiantum and Ancient Greek ἀδίαντον (adíanton, “maidenhair”). Further from Ancient Greek ἀδίαντος (adíantos, “dry”, literally “not wet”), from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓- (ă-, “not”) + Ancient Greek ὑδᾰ́τῐνος (hudắtĭnos, “wet”). From Ancient Greek ὑδᾰ́τῐον (hudắtĭon, “rivulet”), diminutive of Ancient Greek ῠ̔́δωρ (hŭ́dōr, “water”). From the roots of Proto-Hellenic *údōr, Proto-Indo-European *wódr̥ and Proto-Indo-European *wed-.
