Etymology 1

Of uncertain origin. Commonly analysed as descending from dialectal 그슥 (geuseuk) or 거슥 (geoseuk), which has been explained as formed by analogy with the Middle Korean interrogative pronoun 므슥 “what” plus the suffix -이 (-i). In Modern Korean, 거시기 functions as an indefinite pronoun and as a discourse marker used when the speaker cannot, does not remember, or does not wish to name something directly.
