It is commonly believed in Southwest China and Hubei that these meanings are extended from the sense "sweet potato" (Sun, 2014). However, this is almost certainly a folk etymology, because its synonymous variants are widely used in different Chinese topolects (e.g. (sháo) in northern Mandarin and (siáu) in Hokkien) while the sense "sweet potato" is constricted to Southwestern Mandarin, and the earliest attestation of such forms predates the voyages of Christopher Columbus. Yang (2013) proposes that the derogatory senses of are derived from (diǎo, “penis”).
