Etymology
From the meireikei(imperative) form of the verb "聞こえる"(kikoeru, to be heard) + an archaic emphasis suffix "かし"(kashi). See also "これ見よがし"(koremiyogashi,"showing something so as to be seen deliberately for boasting).
