One origin claims that this word is a shortening of 秋 (aki, “autumn”) +‎ つ (tsu, “archaic possessive particle”) +‎ 虫 (mushi, “insect”), literally meaning "autumn insect". The つ in the original term is written in ateji as 津 (tsu).^[1]
