Etymology

Origins somewhat unclear.

  • May be a coinage within Japanese of Middle Chinese-derived roots, as an apparent compound of (ban, dish, plate, bowl (as used for food)) +‎ (ten, wear, wrap; bind, package, possibly from the way that traditional Japanese wallets were bound or wrapped with cord and kept within one's robes).[1]
  • Alternatively, may be a borrowing from Chinese 盤纏 / 盘缠 (pánchan).

Circumstantially, the mixed kan'on - goon reading might suggest a Japanese origin.

First attested in the 1830s in the 江戸繁昌記 (Edo Hanjōki, An Account of the Prosperity of Edo), by 寺門静軒 (Terakado Seiken).[1] May be obsolete in modern usage; not listed in many references focusing on the modern language.[2][3][4][5]
