Etymology

Compound of 撒(ま)き (maki, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 撒(ま)く (maku, “to scatter, to cast, to sow”).) + 菱(ひし) (hishi, “a water chestnut; the rhomboid shape of a water chestnut; a caltrop”). The hishi changes to bishi as an instance of rendaku (連(れん)濁(だく)).
