Compound of () (maki, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (maku, to scatter, to cast, to sow).) + (ひし) (hishi, a water chestnut; the rhomboid shape of a water chestnut; a caltrop). The hishi changes to bishi as an instance of rendaku ((れん)(だく)).
