戸惑い

Compound of 戸(と) (to, “door”) + 惑(まど)い (madoi, “delusion, perplexity”, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 惑(まど)う (madou, “to get lost, to be perplexed”)), from the idea that in the middle of the night, a half-asleep person might get confused and enter the wrong room, i.e. to get lost as to the rooms' doors.^[1]
