Etymology

Derived from verb 恨む・怨む (uramu, “to regret, to feel sorry for; to resent, to bear a grudge against, to feel bitter about something”),^[1] in turn from 心 (ura, “one's innermost thoughts and feelings”).^[2]

First cited in the Man'yōshū of 759.^[3]
