Etymology

Ultimately from the root of () (negu, to pray for blessings or protection) and classical auxiliary verb (fu, indicating repetition or ongoing state); however the intermedial -r- portion is unclear. Compare the similar development of () (hazu, to feel shame) and ()じらう (hajirau, to feel shy).
