Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ɡo̞mo̞kɯ̟na̠ɾa̠be̞]
Etymology
From 五 (go, “five”) + 目 (moku, “piece, mark”) + 並べ (narabe, “line up”). Literally “five pieces in a row.”
Noun
五目並べ • (gomokunarabe)
- a traditional two‑player board game played on a Go board, in which players alternately place black and white stones with the objective of being the first to align five stones in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally
Usage notes
- Typically played on a 19×19 Go board, though 15×15 is common in competitive play.
- Standard rules strongly favor the first player (black); therefore, international tournaments often use 連珠 (renju) rules, which restrict certain opening moves.
