Etymology

Back-formation from まぐわい (maguwai), treating it as a 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “verb stem or continuative form”). The second component in まぐわい (maguwai) is originally from 合(あ)ひ (ahi), modern 合(あ)い (ai), 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 合(あ)う (au).
