    • 1914, 夏目漱石 [Natsume Sōseki], chapter 45, in こゝろ [Kokoro], 下 先生と遺書 [Sensei's Testament]:
      (おとこ)のように判然(はきはき)したところのある(おく)さんは、普通(ふつう)(おんな)(ちが)ってこんな場合(ばあい)には大変心持(たいへんこころもち)よく(はなし)のできる(ひと)でした。
      Otoko no yō ni hakihaki shita tokoro no aru Oku-san wa, futsū no onna to chigatte konna baai ni wa taihen kokoromochi-yoku hanashi no dekiru hito deshita.
      Oku-san, who had a kind of masculine clarity, was unlike ordinary women in that one could quite comfortably converse with her in such situations.
