Usage notes
(phonetics): Double parentheses may enclose a best approximation of the obscured sound, such as ⸨2σ⸩ for two unintelligible syllables, or the obscuring sound or noise, such as ⸨cough⸩ or ⸨knock⸩ for a knock on a door. The IPA Handbook identifies these two usages as equivalent.
