Possibly from Proto-Berber *aləy, from earlier *ăHləy, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ʕal- (“to rise”). Compare Proto-Semitic *ʕaly- (“to ascend”), Egyptian jꜥr (“to ascend, arise”), Tarifit aři (“to climb, ascend”).
