Etymology

From ὅλος (hólos, whole) + an element *σχερός (*skherós, row),[1] the latter formed from a zero-grade of Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (to hold, have), + -ής (-ḗs). See also ἐπισχερώ (episkherṓ, in a row).[2]
