Etymology
From ὅλος (hólos, “whole”) + an element *σχερός (*skherós, “row”),[1] the latter formed from a zero-grade of Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (“to hold, have”), + -ής (-ḗs). See also ἐπισχερώ (episkherṓ, “in a row”).[2]
