Usage notes
- The verb ἐπιβατεύω (epibateúō) ordinarily means “to serve aboard a ship” or “to be embarked,” as in Plato (Laches 183d). In Aristophanes (Frogs 48), LSJ notes that this otherwise neutral verb can convey an “obscene allusion” (cf. ἐπιβαίνω (epibaínō) A.III.3). An ancient scholion explains that Aristophanes exploits a hidden sense of the verb “to mount,” using it αἰσχρῶς (aiskhrôs, “in an obscene way”), by analogy with animals that copulate by mounting.
