αἰσχρῶς

Ancient Greek

Etymology

From αἰσχρός (aiskhrós) (“shameful, base, ugly”) + -ῶς (-ôs), forming an adverb of manner.

Pronunciation

Adverb

αἰσχρῶς • (aiskhrôs)

  1. shamefully, basely
  2. disgracefully, in a dishonourable way
  3. (by extension) obscenely, in an obscene way

Usage notes

  • The adverb αἰσχρῶς denotes the manner in which an action is performed and generally corresponds to the moral senses of the adjective αἰσχρός (aiskhrós) (“shameful, base”). In some contexts, especially in comedy and later commentary, it may be used to indicate an obscene or sexually suggestive manner of speaking or acting.
  • In a scholion on Aristophanes (Frogs 1308), the scholiast explains that a verb is to be understood αἰσχρῶς (“in an obscene way”), by analogy with animals that copulate by mounting; here the adverb qualifies the manner of expression rather than introducing a distinct lexical meaning.
