ἀμέλδειν
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Uncertain. Perhaps connected with μέλδομαι (méldomai), although ἀμέλδειν (améldein) presupposes a root *h₂meld- whereas μέλδομαι (méldomai) more likely derives from Proto-Indo-European *(s)meld-. Beekes proposes that both forms could possibly be unified under a singular root *sh₂meld-. The term has also been connected with ἀμαλδύνω (amaldúnō), itself of uncertain etymology.
