Ancient Greek
Pronunciation
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /a.lé.o.mai̯/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /aˈle.o.mɛ/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /aˈle.o.mɛ/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /aˈle.o.me/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /aˈle.o.me/
Etymology 1
From the same root as the synonymous ᾰ̓λεείνω (ăleeínō) and as ᾰ̓λέᾱ (ăléā, “avoiding, escape”). Given the alternate forms with υ (u), these must have had the earlier form ἀλεϝ- (alew-), to which Beekes relates ᾰ̓λῠ́σκω (ălŭ́skō) as a zero-grade form.[1]
Alternative forms
- ᾰ̓λεῦμαι (ăleûmai), ᾰ̓λεύομαι (ăleúomai)
Verb
ᾰ̓λέομαι • (ăléomai)
