    Etymology 2

Not assigned an etymology by STEDT. However, given how *C-wa can yield fo, as in the similarly-shaped word for "tooth", a derivation from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *waʔ (bird) is possible. See also Benedict (1972:35) for discussion.
