ᚨᛁᚦᚨᛚᚨᛏᚨᛉ
Proto-Norse
Etymology
*ᚨᛁᚦᚨᛉ (*aiþaʀ, “oath”) + -ᛚᚨᛏᚨᛉ (-lataʀ /lātaʀ/). Second element is ancestral to Old Norse -látr (for instance in siðlátr (“well-mannered, virtuous”), from siðr (“custom, manner”)); the sense of the present term is thus ‘one who is mindful of his oaths’.
Proper noun
ᚨᛁᚦᚨᛚᚨᛏᚨᛉ (aiþalataʀ /Aiþalātaʀ/) m
- a male given name
Usage notes
- The use of this masculine a-stem nominal is unclear. It may either be an adjective ‘mindful of his oaths, true to his word’ or a personal name with the same sense.
