Etymology

Learned borrowing from Pali uposatha (“the day before the day of worshiping the lunar god Soma; the day for preparing the worship of the lunar god Soma”), ultimately from Sanskrit उपवसथ (upavasatha).^[1] Cognate with Old Khmer uposattha, upossuda; Modern Khmer ឧបោសថ (ʼupaosaʼthaʼ); Lao ອຸໂບສົດ (ʼu bō sot); Burmese ဥပုသ် (u.pus).
