Etymology

Borrowed from Old Khmer taṃneṅ (administration, governance; administrator, governor; used as a slave name), an extended form of Old Khmer teṅ (to administer; to govern; used as a title of rank or function; etc), whence Thai แต่ง (dtɛ̀ng).

Cognate with Lao ຕຳແໜ່ງ (tam nǣng), Northern Khmer ตัมแนญ, Modern Khmer តំណែង (tɑmnaeng).
