Etymology
Borrowed from Old Khmer taṃneṅ (“administration, governance; administrator, governor; used as a slave name”), an extended form of Old Khmer teṅ (“to administer; to govern; used as a title of rank or function; etc”), whence Thai แต่ง (dtɛ̀ng).
Cognate with Lao ຕຳແໜ່ງ (tam nǣng), Northern Khmer ตัมแนญ, Modern Khmer តំណែង (tɑmnaeng).
