Etymology

    Denominal verb from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *𑀖𑀩𑁆𑀪𑀭 (*ghabbhara, confused) of uncertain origin. Compare Marathi घाबरणे (ghābarṇe), Hindi घबराना (ghabrānā). In case of two successive aspirated and/or breathy stops, the latter stop is deaspirated in many New Indo-Aryan languages.
