Etymology

Likely from a Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰres-, *ǵʰers- (short), and cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬭𐬀𐬵𐬈𐬵𐬍 (zrahehī, the weaker (one)), Middle Irish gerr (short),[1] and perhaps Proto-West Germanic *gaurā (young child).[2] The adduction of Ancient Greek χείρων (kheírōn, worse) as a cognate to this root has been doubted by linguists including Leumann and Beekes.[3]
