Etymology

Of unknown origin.[1] Related to New Indo-Aryan *𑀳𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (*haṭṭaï, to move), and along with it, probably borrowed from a foreign source; see there for more.[2]

The meaning of "to be empty", attested in some texts, is likely spurious.[1]
