Etymology

Cognate with Proto-Iranian *bād- (Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌-𐬠𐬁𐬜𐬀 (auui-bāδa, due to pressure), Khwarezmian [script needed] (ʾn-bʾzy-, to cause to curdle)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰādʰ-.[1] The Proto-Indo-European root is uncertain: perhaps a lengthened grade or lexicalized o-grade of *bʰedʰ- (to bend, press, oppress); or back-formed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰadʰ-, zero-grade of *bʰandʰ- (to bind, tie); or from another root entirely, such as *bʰeh₁dʰ- (to oppress, torment);[2] compare Proto-Slavic *bě̄dà (trouble, adversity). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
