Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀯𑀡𑀤𑀺 (*vaṇadi), from Sanskrit वनति (vánati), वनोति (vanóti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *wanáwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wanáwti, from either or both Proto-Indo-European *wn̥h₁-néw-ti ~ *wn̥h₁-nw-énti (to love) and *wn̥-néw-ti ~ *wn̥-nw-énti (to overcome, win). Cognate with Nepali बन्नु (bannu), Punjabi ਬਣਨਾ (baṇnā) / بَݨݨا (baṇ-ṇā), Assamese বনা (bona), Bengali বানানো (bananō). Cognate through Indo-European with Old English winnan (> English win).
