Inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *फोक्क (phŏkka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀝𑁆𑀝- (-ṭṭa-), from Dravidian. Cognate with Marathi फुकट (phukaṭ), Gujarati ફોગટ (phogaṭ), Bengali ফোকট (phōkoṭ).
