Etymology 2
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *niHanč- (whence also Avestan 𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬃𐬧𐬗- (niiā̊ṇc-, “going downwards”, adjective)), which is generally derived from a compound of Proto-Indo-European *ní (“down”) + *-h₃kʷ- (“facing, looking”), literally “facing down” (whence also Proto-Germanic *nīwalaz (“prone, prostrate”));[1][2] that said, semantic influence from न्यञ्च् (nyañc) in the root sense of Etymology 1 (from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ní (“down, into”) + a reflex of Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk- (“to curve, bend”)) appears quite likely. Compare also Persian نگون (negun, “inverted”), which may be related.[2]
