Etymology 2

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *niHanč- (whence also Avestan 𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬃𐬧𐬗- (niiā̊ṇc-, going downwards, adjective)), which is generally derived from a compound of Proto-Indo-European *ní (down) +‎ *-h₃kʷ- (facing, looking), literally facing down (whence also Proto-Germanic *nīwalaz (prone, prostrate));[1][2] that said, semantic influence from न्यञ्च् (nyañc) in the root sense of Etymology 1 (from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ní (down, into) + a reflex of Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk- (to curve, bend)) appears quite likely. Compare also Persian نگون (negun, inverted), which may be related.[2]
