ढाहना

Hindi

Etymology

Hindi verb set
ढहना (ḍhahnā)
ढाहना (ḍhāhnā)
ढहाना (ḍhahānā)
ढहवाना (ḍhahvānā)

Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan—e.g. Punjabi ਢਾਹੁਣਾ (ḍhāhuṇā), Punjabi ਢਾਣਾ (ḍhāṇā)—, from Prakrit *ढासेइ (ḍhāsei), from Sanskrit *ध्वासयति (*dhvāsayati, causes to decay), an innovated causative from the root ध्वंस् (dhvaṃs, to decay). The Sanskrit root is also the source of Prakrit धंसइ (dhaṃsaï), whence Hindi धँसना (dhãsnā), and its variant ढंसइ (ḍhaṃsaï), with an initial retroflex.

The initial retroflex encountered in Northwestern Indo-Aryan is probably by analogy to the past participle Prakrit *ढट्ठ (ḍhaṭṭha)—e.g. Punjabi ਢੱਠਾ (ḍhaṭṭhā, fallen)—, from *धट्ठ (dhaṭṭha), from धत्थ (dhattha, fallen), from Sanskrit ध्वस्त (dhvasta, destroyed). Compare the development of Prakrit ठड्ढ (ṭhaḍḍha) from Sanskrit स्तब्ध (stabdha).
