Etymology
From the root ज्या (jyā, “to overpower, defeat, oppress”), itself from the root जि (ji, “to conquer”). By surface analysis, ज्या (jyā, “to overpower”) + -यस् (-yas, comparative).

- niyataṃ kuru karma tvaṃ karma jyāyo hyakarmaṇaḥ. śarīrayātrāpi ca te na prasiddhayedakarmaṇaḥ.
- Do your duties with discipline, for doing something is better than being without work. One's body cannot even be maintained without doing work.
