From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́áwšas (“pleasure, liking”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵéws-o-s. Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (zaoša, “liking”), Parthian 𐫉𐫇𐫢 (zwš).
